CUO | Social Spaces is a joint research group of KU Leuven, iMinds and MAD-faculty (KHLim, PHL). The multidisciplinary team of 30 researchers and designers specializes in social design of interactive applications and artefacts. Our work is based on the principles of inclusion, participation, social interaction, sustainability, open design and experimentation. We research and design in the domains of Art & Culture, Future Health and Media & Entertainment. CUO | Social Spaces follows an iterative design process actively involving users and other stakeholders. We do this by participatory design, mapping the context, creating prototypes & artefacts and evaluating the user experience.

We strongly believe in participation, in the research and design process as well as in society, leading to social inclusion. While we also put a broader focus on social interaction, in our view this is not about making society more high-tech. Instead it is about making technology more social. At the same time, we aim at stimulating sustainability, not only by using sustainable materials but also by supporting long-lasting meaningful interactions. The open design process that we use to reach these goals does not stop when a designer delivers, it provides a design that the user can make and remake. Throughout all our projects, we question current research and design practices by experimenting with materials and methods to generate novel insights.
